Thurston's poster is an unusually tall, narrow sheet, about 100 by 30 centimeters, that presents the magician alongside the animals in his act. Howard Thurston was one of the most successful touring illusionists of his era, and by the late 1890s he was building the stage shows that would make him a major name in American magic. The sheet was printed in color by the Otis Lithograph Company of Cleveland, a firm known for theatrical advertising that was then supplying posters to traveling entertainers across the country. Its tall format was typical of the period, when posters were designed to be pasted on fences, billboards, and shop walls where passersby would notice them.
