Howard Thurston's name dominates this color lithograph, and the caption printed beneath the title gives the poster its signature flourish: "A rag and a bone and a hank of hair are changed into a lady fair," a line borrowed from the old rhyme that Thurston turned into a stage routine. Thurston (1869-1936) was one of the most celebrated American magicians of the early twentieth century, touring large theaters with lavish illusions and mystery acts. The poster, likely printed by the National Printing & Engraving Company of New York around 1925, reflects the bold, crowded style of touring show advertising from that era, when a traveling magician's posters were often the main way audiences learned what to expect.
