The poster promotes Howard Thurston, one of the leading American stage magicians of the early twentieth century, and its bold question, "Do the spirits come back?", sits beside skulls and demonic figures. The image trades on the public fascination with spiritualism and séances, which was widespread in the decades before and after 1900. Many magicians of the period, Thurston among them, built their acts partly by staging and then explaining such supernatural effects as trickery. The Otis Lithograph Company of Cleveland, a major commercial poster printer, produced the color lithograph around 1914, when touring illusion shows relied on eye-catching posters like this one to draw crowds.
