This 1914 lithograph advertises Howard Thurston, one of the best-known American stage magicians of his day, under the billing "The Wonder Show of the Universe." The record lists donkeys and demons among its subjects, so the poster evidently draws on the sensational, mysterious imagery that touring illusionists used to draw crowds. Strobridge Lithographing Company, based in Cincinnati, produced many large color posters for theatrical and circus attractions in this period. Thurston toured widely in the early twentieth century, and his posters show how stage magic was marketed as spectacle before film and radio became the dominant entertainments.
