Howard Thurston, one of the most celebrated stage magicians of the early twentieth century, is billed here as "The Great Magician" in a tall, narrow lithograph made for his touring "Wonder Show of the Universe." The Otis Lithograph Company of Cleveland, a major maker of theatrical posters in that era, printed the sheet in color, probably around 1914. Such posters were pasted on storefronts, billboards, and theater walls to draw audiences to live shows, which in Thurston's case meant large illusion productions staged for paying crowds. The print is now held in the Library of Congress's McManus-Young Collection, which preserves many examples of American commercial lithography.
