The caption, "The slave of the Orient," signals the exotic theme of this poster, which advertises Frederick Bancroft as "prince of magicians." Touring conjurors of the 1890s relied on flamboyant publicity like this to draw crowds. The poster was printed in color by Springer & Welty, a New York lithography firm, and copyrighted in 1895 in Bancroft's name. Posters of this kind were pasted on walls and fences ahead of performances, so their bold color and dramatic scenes were meant to catch the eye from across the street.
