College Hall and Lake Waban at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, show a women's college only a few years past its founding. Henry Durant established the school in 1870 in the village of South Natick, about 12 miles west of Boston, and College Hall, its main building, opened to students in 1875. The wooded grounds sloped down to Lake Waban, where students rowed, skated, and took walks, and the lake became one of the campus's defining features. The surrounding community took the name Wellesley in 1881, and the college offered young women a rigorous four-year education at a time when few such opportunities existed.
