Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley about 15 miles west of Boston, was chartered in 1870 as a college for women and opened in 1875. Its buildings were set around Lake Waban, and this view from the far shore shows the campus rising above the water, where students rowed and skated in season. The Boston and Albany rail line ran through the town, which let families from Boston and central Massachusetts reach the school easily, and students came from across the country. By the years when views like this were made, Wellesley had become one of the best-known colleges for women in the United States, with a curriculum that included strong programs in the sciences and languages.
