Henry Fowle Durant, a Boston lawyer, began building Wellesley Female Seminary in the 1870s on wooded land around Lake Waban, in what was then the rural village of West Needham, Massachusetts. He had argued that young women deserved a education as thorough as young men received, and the institution he created set out to offer that. The seminary opened in 1875 and drew students from across New England and beyond, arriving by the Boston and Albany Railroad, whose line ran close to the grounds. The settlement that grew around the college became the separate town of Wellesley in 1881, and the school's name, first given for the estate, came to stand for the place itself.
