Dated January 5, 1924, this glass negative is titled "Navy flyers," though that title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded government officials, military life, and public events in the early twentieth century, and its plates capture a period when naval aviation was still growing into a major part of the service. Glass negatives like this one often show streaks and blemishes as their original coatings slowly deteriorate, so some marks visible in the image reflect age rather than the scene itself.
