The title on this 8 by 6 inch glass negative, Navy Bldg. 4920, comes from a label the National Photo Company wrote on the plate or its sleeve, so it reflects the studio's own identification rather than a verified survey number. The Washington, D.C., studio photographed government buildings, streets and events in the early twentieth century. Neighboring negatives place this one between 1921 and 1922. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on its surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is worth noticing when reading the image.
