The Palo Alto Stock Rancho, a horse-breeding farm that Leland Stanford developed on the peninsula south of San Francisco, is shown here as a broad landscape rather than a close study of animals. Eadweard Muybridge worked at the ranch in 1878 and 1879, when Stanford asked him to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. This view was published as an illustration in Muybridge's 1881 book on animal locomotion, and the sequence photographs made there are often cited among the roots of motion pictures.
