Most of the Muybridge plates show a horse or a man mid-stride, but this one pulls back to show the apparatus itself: the long experiment track at Palo Alto, the painted background set behind it, and the row of cameras waiting along the course. Muybridge made the work in 1878 and 1879 for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. The setup was a line of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track, so the animal broke each wire as it passed. This 1881 print was issued as an illustration in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and it documents the method behind the sequences that later became a foundation of motion pictures.
