Rather than a photograph, this is the printed index page from Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in San Francisco in 1881. The book collected sequence photographs made at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and triggered them as animals passed. The project grew from a wager over whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, a question Leland Stanford wanted settled. The index shows how the plates were organized and labeled for readers of the time.
