The title page of Edward Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* carries a San Francisco imprint and a copyright notice dated 1881. The photographs it introduces were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the property of Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by wires along the track, producing sequences that changed how artists and scientists understood motion. Compared with those images, the letterpress page is a plain piece of print, but it marks the point where the experiments were packaged for a wider audience.
