This is the printed index page from Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which lists the photographic plates inside. The sequences it catalogues were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the farm of Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once. Muybridge used a row of cameras with trip wires to capture successive stages of each movement, and the book brought those series to a public curious about how animals actually move.
