This is the index page of Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a list that tells readers which plates show which animals and movements. The photographs it indexes were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the estate of Leland Stanford, who had asked Muybridge whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track, producing sequences that could be studied frame by frame. The book was published in San Francisco in 1881, and its numbered plates helped establish the sequence photograph as a tool for studying motion.
