This page is printed text rather than a photograph: it is the introductory leaf of Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which presents the series of sequence photographs that follow it. The pictures were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge arranged a line of cameras along a track and triggered them as animals passed. The work grew out of a long-running question about whether a trotting horse ever lifts all four hooves off the ground at once, and the photographs gave motion studies a new evidentiary basis.
