Few places drew more nineteenth-century visitors than Niagara Falls, and this ambrotype, dated to about 1854, shows the cataract just as the glass-plate process was spreading across the country. Ambrotypes used a collodion image on glass set over a dark backing, and they cost less than daguerreotypes, which helped make portraits and views of famous sights available to ordinary buyers. The Library of Congress has published the picture in *Viewpoints* (1975) and *Eyes of the Nation* (1997), and it was included in the *American Treasures* exhibition of 2004 and 2005.
