The four liberties named in this WPA poster, freedom of expression, of religion, from want, and from fear, come from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's State of the Union message of January 6, 1941, in which he called for these freedoms to be secured everywhere in the world. The design pairs a globe and two open books with the raised hand and torch borrowed from the Statue of Liberty, linking the message to American ideals. Produced in color silkscreen by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in Pennsylvania, it reflects the broader wartime effort to build public support for the nation's role abroad.
