Wilson's war message to Congress on April 2, 1917, is the event this color halftone recalls, and its title, "For the freedom of the world," points to the aims he set out for entering the war in Europe. The print pairs the president with the American flag, and its subject headings tie it to wartime communication and to the Congress that approved the declaration. The record dates it to 1917 or 1918, when many patriotic prints turned political speeches into images for home audiences. Its bright, mass-reproduced color reflects the printing methods common to that period.
