A flag billed as the world's largest is shown being cleaned in this May 3, 1955 photograph, a detail that sets it apart from the many flag pictures of the decade. Oversized flags of that era were often displayed at fairs, civic events and commercial promotions, where their size drew crowds and newspaper attention. Keeping a flag of that scale clean meant handling heavy, wind-catching cloth at height, a task that made maintenance itself a spectacle. The picture captures how the 1950s treated the American flag as both a patriotic emblem and a public attraction.
