This print records the moment of the October 28, 1886 dedication of the Statue of Liberty, when President Grover Cleveland arrived at Bedloe's Island for the ceremony and was greeted with a military and naval salute. Side-wheel steamers crowd the harbor around the scene, a reminder of how much of the city's ceremonial life then ran by water. The statue, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was a gift from France to the United States, and its unveiling drew large crowds to the harbor. The print was issued by the New York photographer H. O'Neil and copyrighted around 1887.
