A three-panel wood engraving from the June 13, 1885, issue of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* combines a scene of the official presentation of the Statue of Liberty in Paris on July 4, 1884, a portrait of sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, and a cutaway drawing of the statue's interior. The cross-section shows the iron core and bracing, which was engineered by Gustave Eiffel and allowed the copper skin to stand freely. The sheet reflects the American press's interest in the monument during the years before it was shipped to New York and dedicated in 1886.
