This color lithograph shows the Bartholdi colossal statue under the heading "The gift of France to the American people," and its date of about 1884 places it before the statue was dedicated in New York Harbor in October 1886. At that time, the statue was still being built in France, and American supporters were raising money for its granite pedestal, so prints like this helped spread the idea of the monument as a shared national gift. The sheet was made by the Shugg Brothers firm from a design by R. Schwarz, and its patriotic imagery reflects the optimism that surrounded the project.
