Rising from Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the statue's green copper figure has greeted arrivals by sea since its dedication in 1886. France gave the monument to the United States. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi shaped the copper skin, and Gustave Eiffel's engineers designed the iron framework inside. Its link to the nearby immigration station at Ellis Island made it one of the country's most recognizable symbols of liberty. This print belongs to a numbered Portrait of America series, and its possible 1944 date places it in a period when images of national landmarks were widely circulated as expressions of patriotism.
