A cigar store chain is the unusual sponsor here: the United Cigar Stores Company used this 1918 lithograph to promise that a $50 contribution would bring a bond home, with the Statue of Liberty as its emblem. The third Liberty Loan, sold by the U.S. Treasury in spring 1918 to help pay for American participation in World War I, offered bonds at 4 1/4 percent interest. Retailers, banks and employers took part in these drives, and the poster shows how commercial storefronts became places to buy war bonds. Its mix of patriotic symbolism and everyday shopping makes it a useful example of home-front fundraising.
