Rendered in ink wash on a stiff cardboard sheet, this American eagle is dated November 1898, a month before the Treaty of Paris formally ended the Spanish-American War. The bird was already a national emblem by then, having appeared on the Great Seal since 1782, and artists in the 1890s often drew it to signal patriotism at moments of public feeling. The record does not name the maker, so the drawing's exact purpose is unclear. Its soft tonal washes, rather than sharp outlines, are worth noticing as a sign of how illustrators of the period worked.
