A bald eagle, numbered 61 in its series, was engraved as a vignette for a bank note, the small decorative picture printed on paper currency. The American Bank Note Company, formed in New York in 1858 by the merger of several engraving firms, produced such designs for banks across the country. Eagles were a favorite motif because the bald eagle had been the national emblem since the Great Seal was adopted in 1782. Printed on notes that circulated widely before the Civil War, these images carried the patriotic symbolism of the young nation into everyday commerce.
