In this allegorical picture, Liberty appears as Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth and cupbearer to the gods, and she leans on a bald eagle. The pairing signals that the young republic drew its strength from renewed vigor and freedom. Americans of the late 1700s and early 1800s often turned to classical mythology to express their new nation's ideals, since Greek and Roman figures offered a familiar visual language for virtue and liberty. The eagle had already become a national emblem, adopted for the Great Seal of the United States in 1782, so the image joins two of the young country's most important symbols.
