The Liberty Bell, shown here encircled by a wreath and hung with flags, is one of the most recognizable emblems of American independence. The bell hangs in Philadelphia and became a symbol long before its cracked surface was ever the focus of attention. Its inscription, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof," comes from the Book of Leviticus and was chosen for the State House bell in 1751. Images like this one, which combine the bell with wreaths and bunting, were common in patriotic displays and holiday decorations, especially around the Fourth of July.
