Few American war posters came from a painter of Edwin Howland Blashfield's standing, and this tall lithograph carries the weight of a mural artist's composition. Its slogan, "Carry on! Buy Liberty Bonds to your utmost," urged citizens to help finance the war through the government's Liberty Loan drives, which sold bonds in several campaigns between 1917 and 1919. Printed in New York by Heywood, Strasser & Voigt, the poster stands about 6 feet 4 inches tall, a format suited to being displayed in shop windows, banks and public buildings, where it would have stood out from the crowd.
