The Washington Monument, the 555-foot obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was still unfinished when this print was made around 1890. Construction had stopped in 1854 for lack of money, and the shaft stood as a blunt stump of masonry for more than two decades before work resumed in 1876. Its visible change in stone color, a band where the marble from a later phase meets the older stone, is one of the details worth looking for. The monument was completed in 1884 and dedicated in 1885, so the picture captures it at an awkward, transitional stage.
