Washington Place in Baltimore is anchored by an equestrian statue of John Eager Howard, the Revolutionary War officer who led Maryland troops at the Battle of Cowpens in 1781 and later served as governor of Maryland. The plaza sits in the shadow of the Washington Monument, a Doric column of marble completed in 1829 and often cited as the first monument to George Washington in the nation. Photographs from the decades around 1900 show the square as a showpiece of the city's Mount Vernon Place, where monuments to public figures were gathered into one civic space. The print's reversed orientation suggests it was made from a negative printed without correction, a common quirk of the period.
