This rendered perspective of the Washington Monument dates from the years between 1799 and 1800, when the idea of a memorial in the new capital was just taking shape. George Washington died at Mount Vernon in December 1799, and Congress soon called for a monument to honor him in the federal city he had helped plan. Many designs were proposed and debated long before the present obelisk was begun, and it was not finished until 1884. Drawings like this one show how early architects imagined the nation's tribute to its first president, before the form and site were settled.
