This drawing is a reflected ceiling plan for the Washington Monument in the District of Columbia, a view that shows the ceiling as if the floor were a mirror. Its record dates it between 1799 and 1800, which falls just after George Washington's death in December 1799, when Congress first moved to honor him with a memorial. The obelisk was not begun until 1848 and was not completed until 1884, so this sheet belongs to the earliest stage of the idea rather than the finished structure. It is held in the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering drawings, and it is worth studying for how early plans for the monument were conceived and recorded.
