Few Washington memorials predate this one: the Baltimore column, set in the middle of Mount Vernon Place, was begun in 1815 and finished in 1829, making it one of the earliest monuments to the first president. Designed by Robert Mills, it rises as a marble Doric column with a statue of Washington at its top, and the monument gave the surrounding square its character. This c1912 photomechanical print shows the monument in the early twentieth century, when Mount Vernon Place was a fixed part of the city's cultural and civic life. The image records how the memorial and its setting looked to a generation that was still building public monuments of its own.
