This stereograph looks south from the Washington Monument's height across the working waterfront and the Potomac River, a vantage that shows the city's riverside wharves laid out below the obelisk. Around 1902, the Potomac docks handled freight and passenger traffic, and the view captures how the river shaped the capital's commerce long before the monument's surroundings were fully landscaped. Underwood & Underwood, the publisher credited on the card, sold stereoviews like this one widely in the early 1900s. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of nearly identical photographs fused into a three-dimensional scene, which made distant places feel close to home parlor audiences.
