The caption names Charlie Taft, most likely Charles Phelps Taft II, the Cincinnati newspaper owner and politician who was a half-brother of William Howard Taft, shown here mounted on horseback. The picture is dated to early April 1909, about a month after his brother's inauguration as president, when the Taft family was much in the news. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose Bain News Service produced large numbers of glass negatives for newspapers of the period. The identification rests on caption data the service recorded and has not been independently verified.
