What sets this picture apart is its caption, which names the horse as Surette and places it with President William Howard Taft, who took office in March 1909, the year the glass negative was made. That name comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded, and it has not been independently verified, so it is best read as the agency's label. George Grantham Bain's New York company supplied newspapers with news photographs in the early twentieth century, and its negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. Images like this one document the daily life around the new administration in its first year.
