Women at the Cedarhurst Cup horse show are the subject of this glass negative, a scene from the Long Island village of Cedarhurst, New York. The record dates it to April 24, 1909, and it belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, made the negatives, and its captions were often recorded from memory, so the title is noted as unverified. Early in the twentieth century, society horse shows drew wealthy crowds, and women were increasingly visible in riding and equestrian life, which makes scenes like this one a useful record of that world.
