This glass negative shows Theodore Roosevelt boarding the German liner *Hamburg* in New York, on the occasion of his departure for an African big-game expedition shortly after he left the presidency. The record dates the picture to March 23, 1909, and the title comes from caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, which was a busy press photo agency of the period. Bain's wire-service pictures of prominent figures' departures and arrivals capture the crowds, gear, and public attention that followed Roosevelt well after he left office.
