Theodore Roosevelt stands outdoors in Yonkers, New York, apparently gathering himself before addressing a crowd, according to the caption attached to the negative. The picture dates to 1910, a year when Roosevelt, less than two years out of the White House after his African safari and European tour, was back in the public eye and campaigning for Republican candidates in the midterm elections. The Bain News Service, which supplied newspapers with news photographs, made negatives like this one for quick distribution, so the image reflects the routine work of political reporting as much as the man himself. The location and title come from the caption data, which has not been independently verified.
