The negative itself is the most distinctive thing about this view: an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, cracked across the lower left corner, which the record places among the Detroit Publishing Company's work. The company, based in Detroit, photographed towns and cities across the country around 1900 to 1910, and its large-format glass negatives captured streets, buildings, and households with a level of detail that smaller cameras could not match. Hartford was then a prosperous insurance and manufacturing center, and its residential neighborhoods reflected that wealth in substantial houses set back on tree-lined lots. The plate's later donation to the Library of Congress in 1949 is a reminder of how such commercial archives moved between institutions over time.
