Few American homes are as closely tied to one man as Mount Vernon, the Virginia estate on the Potomac River that George Washington inherited in 1754 and spent decades reshaping. Architectural drawings of the house record the layout and proportions that visitors still see today. Washington enlarged the mansion over several decades, and the riverfront piazza he added in the 1770s became one of its most recognizable features. He died there in 1799, and the house has been preserved as a museum since the 1850s.
