This is the left section of a three-part panoramic view of the mansion and grounds at Mount Vernon, George Washington's Potomac River estate, recorded on a large glass negative around 1901. The full scene was assembled from separate plates, and the center section is not part of the surviving set, so this view shows only one side of the estate. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association had opened the property to the public since 1858, and by the turn of the century it drew many visitors eager to see Washington's home. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views like this one, and its mammoth-plate panoramas of historic sites were prized for their wide, detailed coverage.
