Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate on the Potomac River south of Alexandria, Virginia, is the subject here, and this print comes from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. The shelflist card that accompanies the record is unverified and gives no date, so the exact year of the image is unknown; it is associated with a name, Parkyns, which may refer to the maker or a former owner. Washington built and expanded the house over four decades, and it became one of the most visited early American landmarks, with its piazza overlooking the river and its carefully kept grounds drawing visitors and artists throughout the nineteenth century.
