Lafayette's farewell at Mount Vernon in 1784 is the scene here, with the Marquis taking leave of George Washington's estate after his visit to America. The Frenchman had fought alongside Washington during the Revolution, and his 1784 tour of the young nation made him a celebrated guest at Washington's home on the Potomac. This lithograph was published in New York by E. Farrell sometime between 1840 and 1860, decades after the visit, when interest in Revolutionary-era figures and their homes was growing. It reflects how Americans of that later period remembered the bond between the two men and the estate as a symbol of the nation's founding.
