Published in London on March 31, 1800, this aquatint shows Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia home, only a few months after his death in December 1799, when interest in his estate ran high on both sides of the Atlantic. Alexander Robertson supplied the original drawing, and Francis Jukes engraved and published the plate. Aquatint produces soft, tonal washes rather than hard lines, and this impression is in color, so it reads as both a view of the estate and a piece of early Washington memorabilia.
