Mount Vernon, the Potomac River estate that George Washington built up and lived on for most of his life, is the particular subject here, shown as a hand-colored lithograph issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives sometime between 1856 and 1872. Those were the years when the house had become a national shrine: after Ann Pamela Cunningham's Mount Vernon Ladies' Association began raising money to save the crumbling property in 1858, Washington's home drew steady public attention. Prints like this one, sold cheaply to a growing middle-class market, helped fix the image of the mansion and its broad piazza facing the river in the American imagination.
